WHAT IS TRAUMA?

Trauma is the emotional and physiological response to an event, or series of events, that overwhelms a person’s ability to cope. It isn’t defined only by what happened, but by how the nervous system experienced it.

Trauma can come from a single incident, chronic stress, or long-term relational harm. In cases of complex trauma, these experiences may be subtle, repeated, and span years, often leaving lasting effects on a person's nervous system and sense of safety. Its effects can show up in thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and the body long after the event has passed.

SIGNS OF TRAUMA

Many people think of trauma as only flashbacks or nightmares, but the signs are often broader and varied. These patterns can appear immediately after an overwhelming event or months or years later, and they vary widely from person to person.

Emotional signs

These often reflect a nervous system that’s still trying to regain a sense of safety.

  • Intense fear, anxiety, or panic and a sense of being on edge or easily startled.

  • Irritability, anger, or emotional volatility due to emotions feeling closer to the surface.

  • Numbness or detachment and having difficulty feeling connected to yourself or others.

  • Shame, guilt, or self-blame, especially after interpersonal or relational trauma.

Cognitive signs

Trauma can shift how the mind organizes information and makes meaning.

  • Intrusive memories or visual/emotional flashbacks and feeling pulled back into the event.

  • Difficulty concentrating due to the mind feeling scattered or foggy.

  • Negative beliefs about self or the world like “I’m not safe” or “I can’t trust anyone.”

  • Over-responsibility or hypervigilance, which means scanning for danger even in safe situations.

Physical signs

The body often carries trauma long after the event.

  • Sleep disturbances caused by nightmares, trouble falling or staying asleep.

  • Chronic tension, headaches, stomach issues due to the body anticipating danger.

  • Fatigue or low energy because the nervous system is working overtime.

  • Startle response like jumping at noises or sudden movements.

Behavioral signs

These are the outward expressions of an overwhelmed system.

  • Avoidance or steering clear of reminders, places, people, or conversations.

  • Withdrawal or emotional suppression due to difficulty sharing feelings or needs.

  • Changes in appetite or daily routines

  • Risk-taking or numbing behaviors as an attempt to cope or escape internal distress.

TRAUMA AND PTSD TREATMENT

At Desert Oak Counseling, we begin with a focus on safety and stabilization. This phase helps you build a secure foundation at home, in your relationships, and within your own mind. You’ll learn about your nervous system’s response to stress, and develop coping skills to manage emotions, reduce overwhelm, and tolerate distress.

When you’re ready, we’ll begin the trauma processing phase using EMDR therapy, a proven method for healing trauma through bilateral stimulation. This phase supports the integration of painful memories and emotional release, allowing you to move forward with clarity and strength.

As therapy progresses, you’ll begin to integrate your growth into daily life, reclaiming your sense of self, building resilience, and planning for a future rooted in healing.
