Depression & Low Mood

DEPRESSED MOOD

At Desert Oak Counseling, we understand depression not as a flaw or failure, but as a valid response to lived experience. Low mood, numbness, and withdrawal often reflect the nervous system’s way of protecting itself after overwhelm, loss, or chronic invalidation. We acknowledge these responses while gently supporting clients in reconnecting with regulation, self-trust, and empowerment.

Whether you're navigating persistent sadness, burnout, or a sense of disconnection, our approach integrates somatic awareness, grounding and mindfulness strategies, and relational safety to help you move from shutdown toward healing.

Our trauma-informed lens recognizes that depression often emerges in the aftermath of relational wounding, unmet attachment needs, or experiences where survival required disconnection from self or others. Through modalities like EMDR, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS) and somatic integration, we help clients safely access and process the roots of emotional pain.

We are not here to pathologize, but to honor the adaptive strategies that once protected them. Therapy becomes a space to gently reconnect with your capacity for joy, connection, and self-compassion. Healing is not about “fixing” what’s broken, it’s about remembering what’s still whole.
